MUMS fed up of seeing graffiti daubed on the walls of a subway have joined forces to transform it into a large mural.

Six women have formed the Farnworth And Kearsley Vision Group and their first goal is to improve the subway under Kearsley roundabout.

They want to produce artwork to be painted on the walls in the tunnels to make the school run much nicer for many children and their parents.

Sharon Tonge, aged 41, of Kearsley, said: “The council has spent money improving the subway, with extra lights and anti-vandal paint, but it is still getting vandalised.

“Many children walk through there to school and it’s awful that they have to look at the graffiti and rude words.

“Artwork is the one thing we thought might improve the subway, and could also reduce crime and vandalism.”

Workshops have already been held with pupils at Kearsley Academy to produce some artwork and find out what they would like to see there.

The group has secured £2,500 from Kearsley and Farnworth area forums and work will be carried out in one of the tunnels in coming months.

The young people involved will help to maintain the area and take part in litter- picking sessions, while Community Payback workers will also do work there.

Artwork will be painted on other parts of the subway once more funding has been found. Mrs Tonge, a mother of two, said: “I am hopeful that when we have done some painting and received positive feedback, we will be able to get money for more artwork.

“We want to do this in other parts of Farnworth to make them look better too.

The possibilities are endless.”
