Mark Davies has been given the green light to rejoin Wanderers’ relegation battle but could still miss out on Saturday’s trip to Manchester City.

Scans on a hamstring problem that caused the midfielder to miss the 3-0 defeat at Chelsea last weekend have come back clear, but it is understood Davies still has some tightness in the muscle, which will be monitored over the next few days.

Fears were raised after the 24-year-old pulled out of the squad at Stamford Bridge that he could have damaged the hamstring, which could have potentially put him on the sidelines for a few weeks, including the crunch home clash with QPR.

But while he sat out of indoor training yesterday, Davies is likely to rejoin his team-mates before Friday, leaving him free for inclusion in the squad against league leaders City at the Etihad.

Darren Pratley played in the advanced midfield role at the weekend, and would be at the front of the queue to do so again if Coyle opted to save Davies for the six-pointer against Rangers at the Reebok.

Tuncay or Chris Eagles are other available options, should he opt for the same five-man midfield used against Chelsea.

Davies has scored three goals this season and had been one of the leading lights in an otherwise dismal campaign until picking up the hamstring problem at Norwich just over three weeks ago.

Coyle admitted he had “not been at his best” during subsequent games, prompting the decision to seek medical advice last Friday.

“He can get through games but we need Mark Davies driving past people like he was prior to the problem,” the manager said.

“We have to make sure he is available and 100 per cent.”

Meanwhile, striker Marvin Sordell prepares to face his team-mate Dedryck Boyata at Middlesbrough tonight as England’s Under-21s face Belgium.

England could widen the gap at the top of Euro Championship qualifying group eight with victory at the Riverside over their closest rivals.

The 19-year-old, who is set to win his seventh cap, is looking forward to the challenge.

“Being called up for your country is a great achievement and, hopefully, I get to play for them again,” he said.

“It’s a big game and I’m playing against Dedryck. It will be a good contest will be enjoyable, but obviously we need the three points and we want to win.”
