AN accident blackspot will be subject to major roadworks next month in an attempt to make the junction safer.
work to improve the junction of Derby Street, University Way and Fletcher Street, in the town centre, involves upgrading traffic lights and installing new pedestrian crossings.
The junction will also be resurfaced.
The scheme is being carried out to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety, Bolton Council said.
A total of 16 minor accidents, resulting in 19 casualties, including six pedestrians, have been recorded at or near the junction from 2008 to 2011.
The work is costing £275,000 and is expected to take eight weeks.
In an effort to keep disruption to a minimum, the majority of the work will take place in off-peak hours, the council said.
The resurfacing will require some road closures for the work to take place.
Residents and motorists are asked to be patient and to contact the council’s helpline on 01204 336677 for further information.
