TWO teenagers who were arrested in connection with a spate of arson attacks in Smithills have been bailed.

A 15-year-old and 17-year-old were arrested on Friday morning and were questioned by officers.

They have now been bailed pending further inquiries.

Between 4.30am and 5am on Wednesday, emergency services were called to numerous reports of cars being set on fire.

Five cars were damaged in total in Church Road, Marcus Street, New Church Road and Oakenclough Drive. A skip was also set on fire in Hereford Road.

A Citroen Saxo was set alight in Oakenclough Drive and the fire then spread to the roof of a house, causing a man and a woman to require treatment for smoke inhalation.

There have been increased police patrols over the past few days to provide reassurance and firefighters have also been in the area to carry out home safety checks.
