DAMAGE caused by the high winds and rain earlier this week has forced the temporary closure of Bolton Museum’s Egyptology gallery. No exhibits were damaged but the wind and rain caused a ceiling tile to come away, leading to the closure.

A council spokesman said: “Due to the extreme weather on Wednesday the roof of the Egyptology gallery suffered some water damage which, in turn, caused a ceiling tile inside the gallery to become dislodged.

“For the safety of staff and visitors, we took the decision to close the gallery pending repair work, which was scheduled for Thursday afternoon. As the museum was closed on Good Friday, we hope the gallery will reopen as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience.”

The rest of the museum will be open today and Bank Holiday Monday.

The museum’s Egyptology collection is considered to be the most important held by any local authority in the country.

The museum has more than 10,000 objects, including the items in the Quest For Immortality: The Bolton Museum Collection exhibition, which is touring the Far East.
