NIGEL Reo-Coker believes Wanderers’ recharged young guns must start firing again if the club are going to make a late dash for Premier League safety.

After successive defeats to Fulham and Newcastle put a dent in the Whites’ revival, Owen Coyle’s side return to training this tomorrow morning after a short break in Dubai looking to get back in the groove.

With six games remaining, the club remain two points behind Wigan Athletic and QPR, with two games in hand.

Before their fixture break, signs of wear and tear had started to show in the Wanderers camp, most notably in younger players such as Ryo Miyaichi, David Ngog and Mark Davies – whose form had been instrumental in leading the side to three successive victories prior to the Easter weekend.

Coyle withdrew Miyaichi and Ngog for the 2-0 defeat at St James’ Park, using the pair only as late substitutes, but they could return to the starting line-up when the chase for survival resumes at home to Swansea City on Saturday.

While Reo-Coker accepts there is a responsibility on the squad’s older heads to set an example, he reckons the younger players also need to show their true worth, despite the stresses and strains of a relegation fight.

“You can keep an eye on them but the onus is on them to pick up their game to the next level,” he said. “All you can do is comfort them and try to help them the best way you can.

“You can’t physically make them go up to the next level, it’s up to them.

“They need to deliver out on the pitch and show people why they are playing in a Premier League team each week.”

Another of the squad's senior figures, Kevin Davies, made his return to the starting line up at Newcastle for only the second time in a league game during 2012.

He is keen to keep his spot against the Swans, but feels the experienced players in Coyle’s squad have a major role to play in the run-in.

“The situation we’re in puts more emphasis on the management, the staff and the senior players – like myself, Nigel, Zat (Knight), Jussi (Jaaskelainen) - all have to play our part,” he said.

“I’m not sure who in the squad has been in this situation before. I certainly have but some of the senior players maybe haven't.

“Everyone is down after losing six points but it’s important that we stick together.”
