PEOPLE are being warned not to give out their bank details over the phone to callers they do not know.

Edna Liptrot, of Winslow Road, Hunger Hill, had a call from a company saying she was due to get a refund on her mortgage.

She said: “He asked me to confirm my date of birth, which I did even though I already believed he was trying to operate a dishonest trick on me.

“When he asked me which bank I used I put the phone down.”

She reported it to police and wants to warn others to be wary of suspect callers.

Richard Lindley, of Trading Standards, said: “People should never give bank details over the phone unless it is to purchase something.

“There are a number of scams at the moment and they are impossible to stop because they are around the world and not normally based in the UK. One is stopped, and another will pop up. We need to educate people not to give out their details.”
