STANDARDS had fallen so badly at one Farnworth primary school that the governing body was suspended.

Now inspectors have found plenty to praise at St James CE Primary after the school turned its fortunes around.

The school has been described as improving and rated as satisfactory by Ofsted.

St James was rated as outstanding in 2008, but Bolton Council took control of it in September last year after standards dropped.

Ofsted has since reported: “Parents and carers are very appreciative of the school’s friendly approach and the support provided for their children.

“Pupils describe the schools as ‘happy, helpful and fun’.”

The watchdog now says children in Year Six are leaving school with marks in line with the national average where as before they had been well below.

Teaching was described as “good in many lessons” and the school was said to be a “harmonious community”.

Inspectors stated: “After an unsettled period which had a negative impact on pupils’ achievement, the school’s leaders, ably and determinedly led by the acting headteacher, have implemented wellconsidered and effective actions to drive forward improvement.”

Attendance has also improved.

Acting headteacher Jeff Bonner said: “St James’ School is extremely pleased and proud of its recent Ofsted report.

“The positive outcome of the inspection has been brought about by the commitment of the hard working, dedicated staff, the children’s willingness and enthusiasm to learn and the unfailing support and belief shown by the parents.”

Mr Bonner said the school had been supported by the local authority, the Manchester Diocese and a teaching school from Trafford.

He said: “The rapid progress made while maintaining a positive, happy environment has been all about teamwork and the desire to provide the best possible for those who matter, our children.”

New headteacher Sally Leighton will now take over the running of the school.
