FABRICE Muamba will receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Bolton to celebrate the work of the teams who rushed to his aid.

The 24-year-old is said to be “humbled” to receive the doctorate and said he owes the people who helped with his recovery after his heart stopped for 78 minutes in March.

He said: “I would like to thank the University of Bolton for this award of an Honorary Doctorate. I am very humbled to accept it on behalf of all the amazing men and women who combined to save my life, the paramedics and medical teams of Bolton Wanderers and Tottenham, ambulance personnel, and of course the consultants, doctors and nurses at the London Chest hospital, my family and I owe them all so much.”

Dragon’s Den businesses woman Hilary Devey, actor and playwright Ayub Khan-Din, BBC commissioning editor Aaqil Ahmed, theatre director John Blackmore, health campaigner Ann Johnson, community champion and businessman David Kaye, super-car developer Tony Keating, Bolton Council leader Cllr Cliff Morris and academics Professor Peter Simons and Dr Geoffrey Tabbron will also graduate this summer.

Cllr Cliff Morris is being acknowledged for his successful business career and his service to the community.

Vice Chancellor Dr George Holmes: “We will be delighted to welcome our honorands to the University, all of whom have excelled in their professional and public life and have also done so much for their communities.

“Fabrice is an exceptional young man in his own right but he will receive his honorary doctorate to celebrate and recognise the work of the teams who rushed to his aid. The University is developing its strength in the field of sports science and associated clinical work for elite athletes. There can be no better example of the work of clinicians than the emergency treatment Fabrice received.”

They will be honoured by the University at its degree congregation ceremonies on July 11, 12 and 13 when graduating students, their friends and families will celebrate academic success.

Why give Fabrice a honor WHEN that should go to that doctor that ran on the pitch and give LIFE SAVING AID, Ok I am glad Fabrice is on the mend but surely it should be that doctor that should be honoured and the bottom line is Fabrice Muamba would be DEAD but for the help of that doctor..............

I would laugh if it wasn't so disgusting. The Doctorate is now as prestigious as giving pop stars a knighthood for singing! It is a mockery of what was once an honourable award. The rector or dean needs to rethink his or her position.

Let's look at the positives ... Fabrice was welcomed into this country as a child when his father was seeking political asylum. Since then he has made himself into a successful premier league and England footballer. He turned in excellent performances on the pitch for every club he's played for as well as for his country. He's also a doting father and loving fiance. Now let's think about that incident. His heart stopped beating naturally for 78 minutes but thanks to his super-human physical strength he defeated death. And finally, during his recuperation his humilty and grace meant he never forget to say thank you to his millions of well-wishers at every opportunity. I was at the Reebok when he stepped back on to the pitch for the first time and the emotion in the place was palpable. So, of course the medics are the real heroes of the day, but let's not decry making Fabrice an honorary doctorate. He has come to symbolise Hope, Faith and Life and brought the footballing world together (for a short time). I'm sure whatever Fabrice goes on to do he will be great at it. I for one am delighted he will continue to live in the memory of our town through his doctorate. I cannot think of a better role model for my young children. Three cheers for Fabrice!

I have no doubt he is a pleasant enough guy a good farther and other half. He simply had the misfortune to suffer a life threatening condition and the good fortune that it happened on a premier league football field at an event where skilled medical assistance and equipment was available in the crucial first 3 mins.

Surely equipping the (worst performing in the UK) University with AEDs or giving free emergency first aid training at the uni would be a far better and much more useful use of University Student's funds.

Why should a footballer be given a 'doctorate' for being ill and then recovering? Any recognition should go to the dedicated professionals who actually saved his life.
And what will his title now be?
"Honourary doctor of having his life saved by others"?
Might as well give him an OBE and the Victoria Cross while you're at it....

Whether or not fabrice should have it or not is irrelevent the real issue is the f&ct that cllr morris is been given it for singlehandedly destroying bolton with his inabillity to see basic things are wrong for example not realising that heywood park is an important part of the great lever community and dismissed the petition before it was even submitted or maybe not seeing that it is far cheaper for peopld to shop on the internet rather than making the journey into town and paying the extortionate parking fees..... can anyone tell me what positive action he has takto help any part of the bolfon community?

The hype over his condition was so over the top it fell off the edge, and I question his 'super-human physical strength', he would not have suffered his heart condition otherwise, now would he? Why don't we just make him Mayor of Bolton, or give him a life-peerage, because honours given away like this are an insult to those who truly deserve them. It also makes Bolton University look a little silly in the eyes of other establishments around the country.

i think muamba is good,but ive been going home and away to see them for45 years through thick and thin even now being disabled i still go and pay to out of my pension.good luck to the lad in the future.i dont want a doctorate but woudnt say no to free tickets for home games.come on get a grip bolton.and another big thanks to the medics at spurs.

It seems all contributory acclaim should go to the medics and they probably have their own degrees but that situation shows a personal integrity that doesn't exist in the footballing world all in a days work for them maybe a donation towards medical needs would have been more suitable because no-one will recognise the great work done in time to come.
