A NEWS reporter who has covered stories in Greater Manchester for more than 30 years has spoken of his battle against cancer.

Neal Keeling said he had surgery to clear a tumour on his left kidney in March.

But he has since been told he has spots of cancer on his lungs and he will need further treatment at Manchester's Christie Hospital.

Friends and family have rallied around in support of Mr Keeling who lives in Whitefield with his wife, Felicity. The former reporter for the Bolton Evening News who is now employed by the Manchester Evening News has a 24-year-old son, Patrick.

In today's Manchester Evening News, he writes movingly of his illness and the great care he is receiving by medical staff.

"I have survived at the Manchester Evening News for 25 years on 90 per cent relentless aggression and 10 per cent talent when it comes to story hunting," he wrote. "Spots of cancer are believed to be on my lungs and I will need further treatment at Manchester’s Christie Hospital. The rocky road I thought I was clearing has taken a new turn."
