A MUM has spoken of her pride after her heroic 15-year-old daughter scooped a bravery award for saving an elderly woman from a house blaze.

Beth Edge and five of her friends, all from Astley Bridge, fearlessly rescued a 91-year-old from a chip pan fire in Blackburn Road on September 23.

Beth and Marisa Barton, aged 15, and Ashley Glenn, Grant Walker, Matthew Reilly and Lauren Jones, all aged 16, led the great-grandmother to safety.

The six were stunned to receive the Act of Bravery prize at this year’s Tower FM Local Hero Awards for Bolton and Bury.

The group, who all took their mums for support, were acknowledged at a special celebration at the Holiday Inn in Bolton.

Chloe Edge, Beth’s mother, said: “Teenagers get such a bad rap these days so it’s fantastic Beth and her friends have been recognised like this. We were all bursting with pride when they went up to get their awards and it was emotional. Matthew wants to be a firefighter so this was good practice for him.”

The three girls are in Year 11 at Sharples School while the three boys have just started sixth form.

Beth said: “We were just outside saw black smoke coming out of this house.

“We all went in and this lady was wandering around breathing in all the fumes so we told her she was best to get out. It was a bad chip pan fire and it had burnt her cupboards so we just did what we thought was right.”

Entertainment for the night was provided by former X Factor contestant Joseph Whelan, who also posed for pictures with some of the winners. The 11th awards, which were hosted by Jon and Vix from Tower FM’s breakfast show, decorated other worthy people from the area.

Among them was Annabelle Griffin, a four-year-old Bury girl who was diagnosed with an incurable rare tissue disease called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome last December.

Her family set up a website, annabelleschallenge.co.ukwhich has raised more than £8,000. Annabelle won the Child of Courage award.

Gina Bailey, from Farnworth, won Carer of the Year for her work looking after her three children, one of whom suffers from Cystic Fibrosis.

The Family of the Year award was won by Josh Wilson and his family. The 13-year-old from Bury was diagnosed with a brain tumour when he was three and since then has launched The Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity despite battling serious problems.

Winner of the Young Achiever award was Montgomery Lord, a seven-year-old boy who has already written his first book, Freaky School.
