HORWICH town councillors tonight voted to recommend that plans for a waste transfer station on the controversial Horwich Loco Works site should be rejected.

An application has been submitted by The Urban Quarry Ltd to for a change of use of what is currently an open storage space.

A similar application was rejected by Bolton Council last year because the scheme did not constitute a single comprehensive application for the entire Loco Works site and because "insufficient information" was provided with the plans.

If permitted, the station would involve the processing of building demolition waste together with the erection of a 2.4 metre high boundary fence.

In September the council passed outline plans for the building of 1,700 houses on the Loco Works site, which will form a new housing estate called Rivington Chase.

Councillors expressed concerns about the plans.

Cllr Ken Denton said: "I objected to this application last time and I will again because I know exactly what happens with these things.

"Things get covered in white dust every day and I imagine there will be lots of complaints what with all the new houses that will be built on the estate."

Cllr Kevan Helsby added: "Its just not the sort of business we need when we are developing the area with new houses and technology."
