PLANS to develop the site of the old Green Bengal in Bromley Cross have changed again, and will be debated on Thursday.

Developers C.W. Construction have amended their latest application to build a Sainsbury’s in Darwen Road where the restaurant once stood.

It follows months of wrangling, including a failed appeal to the government, as the company attempt to build the supermarket, two retail units and a car park on the site.

Councillors refused to approve their application in October, arguing if built the new building would unfairly affect residents at 176 Darwen Road.

Now, C.W. Construction have changed the plans to move the building around 5.5 metres away from the house, further into the site.

Officers at Bolton Council planning department are recommending that councillors approve the latest application on Thursday, despite five objection letters from nearby residents over the amended plans.

They argue there is a highway safety issue following on from overdevelopment of the site and noise disturbance to Cornerstone Baptist Church.

But the officers’ report to councillors concludes: “It is considered that the proposed development would be compatible with surrounding land uses, would not unduly harm the amenity of any neighbouring resident, would not jeopardise highway safety and would not harm the character and appearance of the area.”

The scheme was last discussed in October when Bromley Cross ward councillor Norman Critchley led the calls for the plans to be deferred.
