YOUNGSTERS are banging the drum for a fundraiser in support of a school in Africa.

Rehearsals are well underway for a Kenyan evening at Bolton St Catherine's Academy next Tuesday.

Pupils are busy preparing for a drumming session and dancing routine under the watchful eye of the schools artist in residence Nat Biney and the Rev Sue Forest-Redfern.

Melanie Wharton from the academy said it promised to be an amazing night.

She said:: "The Service and Compassion team at the academy have chosen to raise funds for Bolton St Catherine’s Academy partner school, the Tumaini Academy in Kenya as all the students recognize the importance of supporting their peers in Africa because, thanks to the efforts of teachers and support staff, they know the value of a good education and fantastic facilities and support they have access to.

"We are hopeful Pastor Donald Mzungu, the founder of the Tumaini Academy will be here on the evening to talk about the inspirational work he and his staff do daily to support the children.

"A DVD will be shown during the evening showing the work carried out at Tumaini Academy and how the lives of their students have already been changed."

There will also be a fashion show featuring beautiful vibrant African fabric prints, which were brought over by the Rev Forest-Redfern after a trip to Kenya as well as clothes made by the academy to reflect this season's trends.

The school's catering team will be serving food inspired by Kenyan cuisine and visitors can take part in a Round Africa orienteering challenge.

Other games will include a tombola, pin the tail of the antelope and an African safari game.

Tickets, costing £2, for the evening, starting at 6pm can be bought from the school by ringing 01204 332533, or by calling in to reception.
