WANDERERS fans will fall silent during a poignant service to remember lost loved ones tomorrow.

The club's annual service of remembrance and thanksgiving will be held at the Macron Stadium, and starts pitchside at 6.30pm.

The theme of the annual event this year will be "Wanderers at war", and will feature the heroic story of former Wanderers captain Harry Goslin.

In front of a 23,000 crowd at Burnden Park in 1939, the 28-year-old skipper gave a rousing speech before leading his entire team to sign up at the Territorial Army drill hall.

Goslin told the crowds: "We are facing a national emergency.

"But this danger can be met, if everybody keeps a cool head, and knows what to do. This is something you can't leave to the other fellow, everybody has a share to do."

The team swapped the football field for the battlefield, and for six years, the Wanderers first team found themselves in the midst of World War Two as gunners in the Royal Artillery.

Goslin, who was promoted to lieutenant, was killed in action when he was hit in the back with shrapnel during battle in Italy — the only Bolton player not to return.

His regiment is celebrating its 300th anniversary this year, and this summer they are planning to follow in his footsteps and visit his grave at the River Sangro Commonwealth War Cemetery, in Cheti Province, Italy.

Goslin's son Robert, who died aged 72 in 2008, became a senior figure within Bolton Police.

Representatives of the Royal Artillery will be at the service, and music will be provided by the Bolton Artillery Band.

The event will continue in the Macron's Platinum Suite where, during the service, names of loved ones that have been inscribed in the club's memorial book, or engraved on a memorial stone during the past twelve months, will be read out.

The names of family and friends remembered from previous years will be shown on the big screen, and during the service people will be invited to come forward and light candles in memory of loved ones who have passed away.

Refreshments will be served following the service, and the event is open to all, with no ticket required for entry.
