POOCH power reigned at Turton Tower as canines of all shapes and sizes lined up to strut their stuff at the annual dog show.

Hundreds of proud owners packed into the grounds of the historic tower eager to prove their four-legged pals were the best at this year's event.

And whilst the pampered pets sized up the competition there was plenty to do for humans at the fun dog show, which is organised by the Friends of Turton Tower to raise cash to maintain the historic building.

The show has been running for six years and organiser, Margaret Howe, was pleased with this year's turn out and entries into 11 classes, which ranged from most beautiful bitch and handsome dog to best retriever of a sausage.

Mrs Howe, who took along her own rescue Cocker Spaniel, Cole, said: "It's an informal show but a lot of fun. The dogs enjoy it as well."

Cakes and refreshments were on sale alongside stands offering services such as face painting, dog grooming, a book stall and animal charity information.

And in the tower's kitchen garden there was an opportunity for children to make their own scarecrows.

Amongst those hoping to pick up a prize were schoolgirls Rachael and Nichola Hamer from Bradshaw, with their super-sized puppy Martha, an Old English Sheepdog.

It is the first time 11-month old Martha has been entered in a show and she was taken along after the girls' mum, Carolyn Hamer saw the show advertised on a poster.

"We are all enjoying it," said Mrs Hamer, who added that their pet, who needs a huge amount of brushing and walking, had not undergone any special preparation for the event.

"She is quite laid back for a puppy," she said.

"It's all in good fun."
