A PENSIONER was killed after being hit by a car on a busy Bolton road in horrendous weather conditions, an inquest heard.

The Bolton inquest was told Joseph Alan Hurst – known to family as Alan – was 78-years-old when he was hit by a silver Skoda Fabia on Wigan Road in Deane on April 1, 2015.

The former window cleaner was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of his injuries which included, broken bones, resulting in blood loss and a severe brain injury, at around 8pm.

Pathologist for Royal Bolton Hospital, Dr Angelina Ong, said he would have been unconscious almost immediately after the impact.

Mr Hurst, who lived in Howard Avenue, Deane in Bolton, was not married and had no children.

He was a keen footballer and used to work as a former plater after which he was a window cleaner before retiring.

On the day of his death, Mr Hurst had been on his way to Farnworth Labour Club at around 7pm and was crossing Wigan Road near to the junction at Bent Hill Street.

His brother, Paul Hurst of Rivington Road said: "He went out twice a day. He went out to the same pub every day and they knew him and looked after him well."

The court heard that the weather conditions on the evening were 'horrendous' and three drivers who witnessed the incident, Thomas Cleworth, Ahmed Patel and off duty police officer PC Bunn, all confirmed that visibility on the day was poor.

The driver of the vehicle which hit Mr Hurst was Peter Haslam, aged 79, who has since died. Following the accident, police took no action against Mr Haslam.

Concluding, Coroner Alan Walsh said: “A combination of factors such as it being dark, the weather being poor and raining heavily, drivers using head lights and window screen wipers, and Mr Hurst wearing black clothing would have made visibility poor.

“I recognise that it would have been easier for him to see the Skoda than the Skoda to see him. I record that Mr Hurst died as a result of a road traffic collision.”
