GREATER Manchester leaders say discussions are ongoing about how many refugee children from the ‘jungle’ camp in Calais will arrive in Bolton.

The first young people from the camp have started to arrive in Britain, but leaders of Greater Manchester’s Combined Authority say that while the region is prepared to take in unaccompanied children, figures for how many individual areas will take are yet to be finalised.

A spokesman for the GMCA said: “The people of Greater Manchester have a proud history of welcoming people from all over the world to our country and our region.

"Greater Manchester has offered support to more asylum seekers than any other area and we continue to play our part in helping refugees from around the globe who come here seeking support to start a new life.

“Working with other North West authorities, Greater Manchester has made clear to the Government that we are prepared to take part in the Unaccompanied Children National Transfer Scheme.

"However, it is vital that these vulnerable children are adequately supported. Discussions with the Home Office around numbers of children to be accepted under this scheme, and the timing of arrivals, are ongoing.”
