WORK has started to install flood defences near to an area that was devastated by a deluge last year.

Digging equipment has started to carry out remedial works at the River Irwell near to Ringley Bridge in Prestolee.

Defences are due to be put in at the river in a bid to avoid the shocking scenes of last year when Riverside Drive in the village was overrun with water after the river broke its banks.

Work is continuing at the site ahead of the winter period.
