NEIGHBOURS say they are ‘at the end of their tether’ after more than a year of noise and disruption from work on a nearby railway line.

Residents in Moses Gate have tolerated work to electrify the track near their homes – much of which takes place in the early hours – since last summer and believed it had come to an end.

But now one of the residents affected has videoed the noisy drilling taking place after midnight from nearby Ivanhoe Street.

Gareth Murphy, who has a seven-month-old baby, filmed the workmen after returning from a night out, while he was walking his dog. He has posted the video online.

Network Rail recently began a further stage of the scheme – part of The Great North Rail Project – to the surprise of residents, who say they had not been warned it was due to start up again.

Another neighbour Michelle Fitton, who lives in nearby Ivanhoe Court, has set up a Facebook group for residents affected by the work.

She said neighbours were annoyed by the lack of communication from Network Rail and had ‘no idea’ that a further stage of the work was planned until a sign appeared at the railway access point.

She said: “We had 12 months of constant noise. It’s started again and they’ve not even had the courtesy to tell us.

“We didn’t know it was being done in phases. We all spoke to each other and said we’d had enough.”

Ms Fitton, aged 35, who lives with fiance Gary Stone, said the noise came from vehicles, heavy machinery and the workforce.

She said: “We understand they have to do this work and we have to put up with it, but the workers on the railway are shouting to each other at night, and the vehicles are beeping when they are reversing.”

Ms Fitton added that the work was now beginning to have an impact on her quality of life

She said: “They keep doing work at bank holidays so you think you’re having a long weekend off work, but it’s anything but relaxing because of all the noise from the railway.

“Even though it’s summer, you can’t have your windows open at night because it’s too loud.”

She also added that she had been late for work on several occasions due to work vehicles blocking the roads.

She said: “It’s just inconsiderate. People are getting towards the end of their tether. Enough is enough.”

Mr Murphy’s partner Corinne Nurtney, who lives in Wood Edge Close, said: “We have a baby asleep at the back of the house and the monitor picks up all the noise.”

She added that residents were worried about the affect the drilling could be having on the structure of their homes.

She said: “On top of the noise drilling at stupid o’clock, they’re not using normal drills. They are using core drills, which we were pre-warned about.

“My house is the second one in on the cul-de-sac. Things I have hanging on my bedroom wardrobe physically shake. I worry what’s happening to the structure of my house?”

Network Rail said that notification letters were sent out to all residents who live within 150m of the railway, included Ivanhoe Court and Ivanhoe Street.

Mark Killick, chief operating officer for Network Rail, said: “These essential improvements will ensure the station is fit for use for many years to come as the demand on train services increase.

“The work will allow more trains to run between Manchester and Preston, enabling faster and more frequent journeys for passengers in Bolton.

“I understand the work will cause disruption for some people and I apologise but in the long term, the enhancement of the station will improve the passenger experience.”

There is a public information event in the area on Tuesday between 4pm and 7pm at Farnworth Baptist Church, The Well, Trafford Street, Farnworth.

The current phase of work at Moses Gate is expected to continue until August 28.
