ONE of Lancashire’s best-known folk bands is looking to re-record a song paying tribute to Nat Lofthouse in a bid to help fund a possible statue of the Wanderers legend.

The Houghton Weavers wrote and performed a song called The Lion of Vienna more than 20 years ago.

It was played at the match against Chelsea at the Reebok Stadium on Monday and at the funeral on Wednesday.

Since then, the band has been inundated with requests for a CD of the song but the group is considering going back into the recording studio to produce a more up-to-date version.

And this, it is hoped, would be made available on iTunes, Amazon MP3 and a host of other download websites, generating money that would be put towards a statue that could be put up at the Reebok should the club be amenable.

Singer Tony Berry said: "It's proved to be a very popular song and we feel it would be a great way to help provide a lasting tribute to Nat Lofthouse.

"We're currently putting the feelers out to see if there would be enough interest in going ahead with the project."

As a taste of what you can expect, the band has agreed to allow The Bolton News to stream the existing song.
