BIG-hearted bakers raised £2,000 for Syrian refugees — by making cakes.

The 26 Bolton volunteers took to their kitchens to raise the cash for the #Cakes4Syria campaign.

The fundraising scheme –which runs through the month of Ramadan — is providing funds for those affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Syria.

Since the appeal began, more than 350 cakes have been sold in Bolton and hundreds more across Greater Manchester.

More than 1,000 volunteers up and down the country will deliver a staggering 40 tonnes of chocolate-fudge cake through the campaign.

Abdul Basit, a #Cakes4Syria volunteer, said: “Fasting during Ramadan really brings home how blessed we are to live in the UK. Whilst 19 hours isn’t easy, we know that when we break our fast we will be safe, well fed and sharing our iftar with our loved ones.

"Sadly, the people of Syria will not know this relief. I hope that people will support the campaign by calling our call centre and ordering a delicious chocolate cake. The money raised will make a real difference to the people caught in this crisis”

The #Cakes4Syria campaign began in 2011 when a group of young Muslims from Bradford decided that they could no longer stand by and watch as the people of Syria continued to suffer.

Since 2011, the campaign has expanded nationwide and gone from strength to strength. It now employs more than 1,000 volunteers, delivers to more than 1,000 UK postcodes, and generates more than a million social media interactions.

The theme of this year’s appeal is ‘Share Your Relief’ and encourages UK Muslims to reflect on the relief they feel at iftar – the late evening meal at which the long daily Ramadan fast is broken – by giving generously to support those less fortunate. ‘

The last chance to buy a cake will be on Monday July 13 with final deliveries taking place on Wednesday July 15. Cakes cost just £10 and can be ordered by calling 01274 952 144, texting 07511 724 372 or online at www.thecakecampaign.com/order.php
