FOR the families of soldiers on the frontline, Christmas is a difficult time of year.

But troops at the Territorial Army barracks in Bolton, some of those who have served in Afghanistan in previous festive periods, stood side-by-side with veterans, their families and the Mayor of Bolton, Cllr John Byrne.

All were at the Nelson Street camp for the Bolton Artillery's annual Christmas concert, a traditional thank you for the families of the men and women of the TA.

Captain Matthew Trump, who organised the event, said: “It is a good chance for us to thank the families for having to put up with us being away once a week, some weekends and for the annual camp.

“The band we have is fantastic and has performed around the country and abroad.”

C h r i s B u l l e y, o f Stoneclough, spent Christmas stationed in Afghanistan two years ago.

The 30-year-old joined the TA more than four years ago after finding himself out of work.

H i s p a r t n e r, Na t a s h a Stephens, who he met at the unit where she is employed as a medic, is now expecting their first child.

He said: “I got the chance of going to either Afghanistan or Cyprus and I opted for Cyprus but got sent to Afghanistan.

“It had been difficult because we were living on rations for a while but when Christmas came we had a big carvery.”

The un i t ’ s band whi ch performance at Tuesday night's concert, are on the look out for new members.
