1. See Horwich shine bright as the town’s Christmas lights are switched on. The lighting of the Civic Christmas Tree and carol service will take place at the roundabout, near the Crown Hotel, at 6pm on Friday.

2. Go back to the 1980s with a night of music from the likes of Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, Ultravox, The Human League and Soft Cell. Tribute band Electro 80s will be at the Moses Gate, Farnworth, on Friday night.

3. Visit a farm in Edgworth for a festive event featuring Father Christmas, llamas and donkeys. The Wellbeing Farm will hold a Christmas Fair and Artisan Market, from 11am to 4pm on Saturday, where there will also be a live nativity, bouncy castle, refreshments and festive cheer.

4. Round up the family and get down to the Albert Halls for a night of festive fun at this year’s pantomime. Cinderella, starring Bolton entertainment favourite Stu Francis, runs until January 4.

5. Travel slightly further afield and enjoy Shrek the Musical in Manchester. The tale of the green ogre, an annoying donkey and down-to-earth princess is on at the Palace Theatre until Sunday, January 11.
