BOLTON funnyman Peter Kay revealed he has written the second series of sitcom Car Share.

But fans will have to wait a while for it to hit screens as the 42-year-old needs lighter nights to begin filming with co-star Sian Gibson.

The show — which followed the pair as supermarket colleagues forced into a new car share scheme — originally premiered on BBC iPlayer in April, becoming its most successful series.

Speaking on BBC Radio Wales, Peter said: “Yeah we’ve written it. We wrote it a while back now and we’re just waiting for light nights. You see because we drive around a lot we need to shoot it in May/June. People say why don’t you do a Christmas special? The problem is it goes dark at half seven. You can’t really drive around in the dark.

“It’s really difficult to light the inside of the car, it’s very boring and technical, but driving around in May and June it doesn’t go dark until 10 o’clock at night so you can film until about 8 o’clock you see. And really, the whole show is set outdoors but in a car, so we need as much daylight as we can get so the plan is to film in next May/ June."

Last month, Car Share picked up four gongs at the annual Royal Television Society North West Awards — best comedy programme, best performance in a comedy for Peter, best post production and the best script writer prize for the Phoenix Nights star and co-writers Sian, Paul Coleman and Tim Reid.

Peter said: “I was never too sure people would like it because it was just two people in a car talking and I thought, will people in this day and age sit and watch that? I did my best, and me and Sian had a wonderful time writing it and working on it.

"We have known each other for 20-odd years and we have such a good relationship and a chemistry that I thought, if we could just capture that one screen, it might come across.

"Sian is brilliant, she is such a good actress but she really shone in it. She's so funny and lovely, she's great."
