THE Tardis landed at a Farnworth school to take the children back to where it all began — the swinging sixties.

Our Lady of Lourdes RC Primary School marks its golden jubilee this year and to celebrate the milestone , the school held a 1960s day.

Children went to school dressed in the fashions of the time and the day began with a Doctor Who-themed assembly led by the year six class in which they travelled back in time in the Tardis to show what life was like in the 1960s.

Throughout the day children enjoyed a disco, and art and craft activities including creating tie-dyed shirts.

They also took part in a traditional sports day complete with an egg and spoon race and tug- of-war with the fun day ending with a street party in the school yard.

Headteacher Linda Chadwick said: “The children came to school dressed in amazing costumes to identify with the era and the parents and grandparents went to a great deal of trouble to provide their costumes.”

Yesterday a special Mass was held in the Parish Church of Our Lady of Lourdes.

The church has a display marking the last 50 years of the school, showing how the uniform, building and activities have changed over the years.

The school opened on January 7, 1964, with 167 children on the register and six teachers. It now has 240 pupils, including a nursery class, and 12 teachers.
