RESIDENTS claim that another child could be killed on the streets of Bolton if something is not done to slow cars down.

The remark was made at a Harper Green Area Forum Meeting held on Monday evening on the same road that three year old Muhammad Ahmed, known as Bilal, was tragically killed last month after he was hit by a car.

No action was taken against the driver involved in the accident in which Bilal died.

Cllr Sue Haworth started the meeting by paying tribute to the youngster and recognising that residents had been in contact with the council to make Ellesmere Road, where the accident happened, safer.

She said: "A number of residents have come forward since that tragic accident and probably also sent their views to highways to say that something should be done.

"When something like that happens a lot of people show concern. A lot of people have shared the view to the additional assessment team that the road can be used as a bit of a cut through area.

"I just want to reassure you that it's good that the community has reported this and is giving a view on that so that the council can look in to it."

Later in the meeting resident Peter Brabbin who lives in Farnworth commented: "I can hear cars racing up and down all the time and no one seems to do anything about it.

"The 20mph speed limit is a waste of time and waste of money.

"Someone will be get killed soon and something needs to be done before that happens."

Another resident questioned as to how the 20mph speed limit was enforced on the estates.

Cllr Haworth explained: "The evidence shows that if we get one car that follows the 20mph speed limit it could enforce it to another 6- 10 cars.

"It was worth the finance to do it because if you get the speed down it's a fact that it saves a child's life.

"The enforcement comes down to the police and I would ask that people keep reporting it to them.”

Resident Les Perry asked if cameras could be put in to prevent speeding down Plodder Lane in Farnworth.

He said: "Can we not get cameras up, there was a smash down the lane the other week and it could have been a lot worse too.

"How many people around Farnworth will be killed before something is done about this?

"You need to be putting speed cameras up in residential areas. Plodder Lane is a speedway, it's unbelievable."

Cllr Haworth said she would speak to the council's highways department about how many speed cameras are available.
