FINDING out one family member has cancer is hard enough — but teenager Emily Clinton has been given the devastating news twice during her life.

The 18-year-old, whose father and grandfather have both had prostate cancer, will take part in a sponsored night-time charity walk alongside her mother Christine.

The Clintons, from Dean Court, Bolton, have signed up for the March On Cancer, which takes place in Manchester on Saturday, to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Emily’s grandfather Tony died from prostate cancer in 2010, aged 82, while her father Peter, aged 58, has recently undergone radiotherapy treatment and is due to go back for further tests in November.

Emily has managed to fit her training for the event around studying teaching at Edge Hill University and working part-time at Hobbycraft in Round Hill Way, Bolton.

This is the second fundraiser she has done for Cancer Research UK.

She raised £500 for the charity by taking part in this summer’s Race For Life. Emily said: “Grandad was amazing — I was always so close to him and I loved him very much. My nan is so strong and when she lost grandad she got me through it.

“We couldn’t believe it when dad was also diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year. It came as a real blow to us, especially as he was just getting better from his second heart attack.

“But he is doing really well and I am just glad he listened to me about visiting the doctors because of his symptoms.”

Mrs Clinton, a store assistant, aged 53, added: “It will be quite an emotional evening. As a family, we are immensely proud of Emily and what she’s done for Cancer Research UK.

“We are really looking forward to the walk. We are well prepared and we will be sure to bring our torches!”

The March On Cancer is part of Stand Up To Cancer, a joint fundraising campaign between Cancer Research UK and Channel 4.

Alison Barbuti, Cancer Research UK’s spokesperson for the North West, said: “We are very grateful to the Clinton family for their commitment to Stand Up To Cancer.”

It will start at 7.30pm at The Piazza outside Media City in Salford and the route will include Salford Quays, the Lowry and Old Trafford football stadium.
