A ROYAL Bolton Hospital ward is to be extended to improve capacity after town planners approved the application.

Hospital bosses applied to extend its R1 ward near to the Women's Healthcare facility.

According to a statement submitted with the application the one storey building will increase patient capacity provide temporary accommodation for maternity wards M1 and M6.

As well as providing extra beds, the new building will provide a link between the maternity wards and the R1 building.

The extension will have an external feature entrance way and a number of options have been suggested for this to prevent the new block looking featureless.

These include breaking up the new entrance way with a variety of textures and different finishes.

Plans have been created by DAY Architectural based in Deansgate, Manchester.

The extension was approved by Bolton Council at the end of March, work must begin within three years.
