BEER festival organisers are toasting success after thousands of punters poured through the doors at the Horwich Beer Festival.

The impressive range of locally-brewed beers and ciders attracted more than 2,000 drinkers to Horwich RMI over the weekend.

Organisers say they have raised at least £150,000 for charity since they first launched the festival 15 years ago.

John Green, chairman of the Horwich Beer Festival Committee, said: “It has been an exceptional year for the festival.

“People of all ages really enjoyed it and we were extremely busy all weekend.

“I think it is because people love trying all the new beers. They’re brewed in the old way and are poured straight out of the barrel. They seem to have their own sort of magic.

“Locally-produced ciders and flavoured lagers have also done very well this year.

“On top of the excellent beers, the atmosphere was brilliant too. Everyone really enjoyed it.”

Punters were also treated to entertainment from Gerry Cullen and Best Kept Secret.

Money raised from the festival will be divided between local, national and international charities chosen by the Horwich Rotary Club.

The event comes just over a month before Bolton Beer Festival at Bolton Rugby Club from Wednesday, October 15, to Saturday, October 18.

More than 200 real ales, 60 lagers and 20 ciders will be on tap at the annual event.

The festival will be preceded on Saturday, October 11 by a Bavarian Night, including music from an oompah band.

More than 6,000 people visit the festival each year.

Entertainment will be provided by the Boozie Woozie Band and The Managers, as well as beer festival veterans Jerome McMurray and Max, and Cuban musicians Boat Band.

Organisers are appealing to individuals or organisations who would like to sponsor a barrel or glass. Details can be found at beer-festival.co.uk — or by calling the fundraising team on 01204 540116.

Other beer festivals on the agenda for fans of real ale include the Edgworth Real Ale Festival at The Barlow from Friday, September 26, to Sunday, September 28.
