CLOUDY skies did not stop hundreds of cyclists, swimmers, runners and unicyclists from enjoying this year’s Horwich Festival of Racing.

Competitive racers and people taking part in fun events pounded the streets of the town centre for the annual event, which this year included a triathlon for the first time.

Events taking place on the circular route, which encompassed Lee Lane, Chorley New Road and Winter Hey Lane, included a unicycle road race, a fun run and street orienteering, in which competitors raced to navigate to points around the town.

Among those enjoying the day was Lee Clark with his eight-year-old daughter Amy, who were taking part in the one-lap fun run.

Mr Clark said: “It was her first ever race, and she enjoyed doing it. We didn’t do much training but it was good to go and have a go on the day.”

In the past the festival has been a breeding ground for a number of future Olympians, including Jason Kenny and Laura Trott, who have both taken part in the event.

Hoping to follow in their footsteps is Jordan Stanworth, from Morris Green, who won the under 16s race and also took part in the seniors race.

The 15-year-old has been a cyclist for the past three years and rides for the Achieve Skinnergate Racing team at a number of events.

His father Darren said: “This is a good local event, and he was really pleased to win it.”

Event organiser Neil Brown said the first ever triathlon event went well but that the weather wasn’t in the festival’s favour.

He said: “It would have been better if the sun was out and people could sit out in the warmth, but I am grateful for everyone who still came down and to the competitors for making it a success."
