NEW pedestrian warning signs have been installed in a potentially dangerous stretch of road in Horwich.

The four signs have been placed in a section of Mill Lane — at the point where the road narrows and where there is a blind bend with no pavement for pedestrians to use.

Horwich North East councillor Richard Silvester was contacted about the potential dangers of the area by concerned local residents who regularly use the stretch of road.

They wanted to know if any improvements could be made to warn motorists of the potential for pedestrians to be in the road.

Cllr Silvester said: “I agreed that something needed to be done as I also walk up and down Mill Lane and Foxholes Road as a pedestrian.

“I also see people of all ages walking this stretch of Mill Lane as well – elderly people, schoolchildren and walkers in general enjoying the nearby countryside and the Bridge Street Local Nature Reserve adjacent to Mill Lane."

He contacted Bolton Council’s Highways Department to ask if pedestrian warning signs could be erected.

Each sign cost £325 and were mounted on street lighting columns in prominent locations with a yellow background so that they would stand out.

They were paid for out of the Horwich North East area forum budget — a move which was agreed with Ward colleagues, Cllr Kevin McKeon and Cllr Joyce Kellett.

Similar pedestrian warning signs were erected along New Chapel Lane in Horwich a few years ago, again paid for from area forum money.

Cllr Silvester has also asked the Highways Department if the Mill Lane and Foxholes Road area can be considered for a future 20mph zone.
