VULNERABLE groups of residents with different needs have been enjoying weekday activities in a refurbished building.

The Brazley Community Centre in Cedar Avenue, Horwich, underwent a £1million internal makeover beginning in February.

It is now suitable to individually house two distinct sets of visitors who arrive by minibus from a catchment area covering a third of the borough.

Half the premises is used to provide older adults' day care to about 30 over 65-year-olds that previously took place in the neighbouring dilapidated Horwich Day Centre, a former library now standing empty.

The remainder of the revamped accommodation hosts day care sessions for between 20 and 25 adults with learning disabilities that used to be held in The Hilton Suite in the basement of the now demolished Horwich Leisure Centre.

Adrian Crook, assistant director for the department of people at Bolton Council, gave a positive update on the project to the Two Towns Area Forum held last night in Blackrod.

He said: "It's a lovely space. So far, feedback is good.

"There is an adapted bathroom and a pamper room for the adult day care.

"The younger people have a kitchen area to practice their cooking skills and learn to look after themselves.

"We're still doing some finishing touches so we'll hoping to have an official opening."

The community centre has been modernised and refurbished to provide comfortable and welcoming spaces and a conservatory was added to the roomy lounge.

Town and borough councillor Richard Silvester said: "Can I compliment you and your team because it's a massive investment for Horwich?"

Mr Crook said the community centre has an unused community space which Bolton CVS is looking into taking over with other partners.
