CAMPAIGNERS are calling for a report into the policing of Bolton’s EDL and UAF demonstrations to be made public after an officer was cleared of any wrongdoing.

Members of justice4bolton are calling for the publication of the Independent Police Complaints Commission’s report following the demonstration in Bolton on March 20, 2010.

The demonstration saw hundreds of English Defence League demonstrators gather in Victoria Square, as well as hundreds of Unite Against Fascism counter-protestors.

Their demand for its publication follows the case of PC Alan Glover, from the police’s tactical aid unit (TAU), who was cleared of two counts of perverting the course of justice after the Crown Prosecution Service offered no evidence two days before the trial was due to start.

In an earlier hearing involving another police officer, Prosecutor Paul Mitchell told the court that TAU inspector Robert Cantrell, who had a charge of perverting the course of justice dismissed in February this year, was shown in Granada TV film footage punching anti-fascist protester Alan Clough in the face.

The prosecutor said Cantrell could not be charged with assault because it was outside the time limit of six months.

A justice4bolton spokesman said: “The IPCC has finished its investigation into the complaints received about the policing of the Unite Against Fascism protest against the English Defence League in March 2010.

“The report has not yet been published because of the risk that it would prejudice criminal proceedings.

“There is no reason now not to disclose the report and we expect it to be published immediately.”

The case against PC Glover was dropped due to “enhanced” video evidence which came to light.

Mr Clough said he was disappointed with the outcome.

He said: “I was hoping for some justice after three long years but we seem as far away from it as we were in March, 2010.”

Rick Coates, who made the original complaint that led to the decision to prosecute Insp Cantrell and PC Glover, said he had not been informed by the IPCC of the outcome of his complaint.
