YOUNG people are celebrating the true spirit of Christmas by helping those less fortunate than themselves.

Ladybridge High School pupils have packed 185 shoeboxes — last year it was 173 — for Operation Christmas Child which distribute essential and luxury goods.

Year 11 students led year group assemblies explaining the work of the charity and urging others to get involved.

Headteacher Hilary D'Arcy said: "I am overwhelmed, as always, by the generosity of our very special students here at Ladybridge.

"This year, so many more students have filled beautifully wrapped shoe boxes with really thoughtful presents for children less fortunate than themselves.

"Our compassion will stretch across the miles to the developing world this Christmas."
