THE Duke of York, Prince Andrew, will be in Leigh on Friday at a ceremony which will honour digital award winners.

The Royal Family member will be at The Turnpike to present bronze certificates to young people and adults for the Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award (iDEA), a digital version of the Duke of Edinburgh award.

The ceremony was originally due to take place in November and then March but bad weather conditions scuppered plans on both occasions.

Prince Andrew will be greeted at 11am by the mayor and mayoress of Wigan borough, Cllr Bill Clarke and Joan Clarke, along with other dignitaries.

He will then be given a briefing held by Wigan Digital Taskforce members which includes Joining Communities, Leigh Hackspace and Wigan Council before he is taken to the exhibition area.

Speeches will be carried out by the council and its apprentices, as well as representatives from community group True Colours CIC and Wigan and Leigh College.

After the presentation, Prince Andrew will be invited to give a speech and take a closer look at the work that community projects involved with iDEA do.

The iDEA programme can be accessed for free with Wigan Council being the first to roll out the programme.

The silver iDEA award is available this year and the gold award can be won in 2019.

The programme can be done in groups, as a family or individually from a tablet, phone or computer.

Everyone who takes part in iDEA will also be given a digital badge which counts towards the bronze award.
