BRASS locks are being stolen from electricity sub-stations across Lancashire on a weekly basis.

Numerous high-voltage sites are left open following thefts, posing a danger to children, according to Electricity North West and Hyndburn MP Graham Jones.

Mr Jones met with representatives from the electricity network operator to discuss the issues after sub-station locks were stolen in Church, Milnshaw and Accrington.

Electricity North West said the danger posed by unlocked sub-stations was a pressing concern right across the county and urged residents to be vigilant.

Mr Jones had also been told by consituents that suspicious vans had been making ‘rounds’ following what appeared to be organised times and routes in order to steal metal such as manhole covers.

He said: “They and I are very concerned about the possibility of someone being hurt.

“An open sub-station in Birtwistle Street in Accrington was entered by some inquisitive children who were trying to get their ball back.

“The stations are high-voltage sites and very dangerous, but these people have no problem with putting young lives at risk.

“Electricity North West believes the problem is due to organised criminals who are leaving the stolen metal at drop-off points and it is then being ferried abroad.

“It is not being taken to local scrap dealers to avoid the police.

“Some of my constituents have observed the same thing. The same vans driving down the same streets in Accrington like clockwork in areas hit by thefts. It is as though they have scheduled routes.”

The MP has raised the matter in parliament where he called on the government to bring in stronger deterrents and punishments.

Mark Williamson, engineering services manager for Electricity North West, said: “The theft of brass locks from substations is becoming a weekly occurrence in Lancashire.

“Despite being worth only a few pounds, the impact that this could have is huge.

“Live equipment in sub-stations is incredibly dangerous and I urge anyone who sees an open sub-station to contact us immediately on 0800 195 4141 so our engineers can make it secure.

"We are working closely with Lancashire police to address metal theft on our network.”
