WANDERERS fans – whatever their political colours – may not have been happy to see Ed Balls in Bolton this weekend.

After campaigning in Bury town centre on Saturday, the shadow chancellor – a devoted Norwich City fan – took some time out to watch his beloved Canaries take on the Whites at the Macron.

But Mr Balls, who was seen chatting to Labour’s Bolton North East candidate David Crausby in the home director’s box, was a bad luck omen for Bolton Wanderers.

A late injury time goal by former Celtic striker Gary Hooper in the 92nd minute meant the match finished 2-1 to Norwich City.

Mr Crausby said: “Ed may be a Norwich city fan, but Bolton people being how they are they welcomed him into the home director’s box.

“When Norwich scored in the 92nd minute Ed was delighted and jumped up – he wasn’t that restrained.

“We may not have been on the same side yesterday, but we are back on the same team today.”

Earlier in the day, Mr Balls talked to families in Barista Cafe Bar in The Rock, in Bury town centre, with Labour's Bury North candidate James Frith.

He also tried his hand at pulling a pint behind the bar.

Mr Balls said: “I came to Bury North to support James’ campaign for a Fair Deal for Bury and meet local families who are struggling under the Tory government.

“They told me they're finding it hard to make ends meet with cuts to their tax credits, higher energy bills and rising child care costs.

“We spoke about Labour’s fully funded plans to expand free childcare places to 25 hours a week, introduce a 10p tax rate to cut taxes for those on low and middle incomes and freeze energy bills until 2017. ”
