DRIVERS are being warned to expect 'severe unavoidable congestion' in Westhoughton while emergency roadworks are in place.

Temporary traffic lights will be in force 24 hours a day on Wade Lane Bridge at the entrance to Hall Lee Bank Park in Park Road, to allow repairs to an underground cable.

The work, which is being carried out by Electricity North West, started on Thursday morning and Bolton Council are warning it could last until next Wednesday.

The lights will be manned from 7am-9.30am and 3.30pm-7pm to improve traffic flow.

Drivers are advised to use alternative routes where possible.
