DOUGIE Freedman claims he will not be making unnecessary changes as Wanderers seek to avoid a giant-killing at Shrewsbury in the Capital One Cup.

Chris Eagles and Chung-Yong Lee are the major doubts after picking up knocks in the weekend draw at Burnley.

But the manager insists he is not willing to compromise his side’s place in the competition by taking gambles with his starting line-up and expects to name a similar side to the one that fought to a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor.

“This is a serious game and I have got a responsibility to these wonderful fans who come along and pay good money,” he said. “Possibly there will be a couple of changes because of knocks or a bit of tiredness, but there certainly won’t be changes because we are taking it lightly.

“We’re there to be shot at – and sometimes we’ll be shot down. Sometimes we’ll win the game and no-one will say anything about it.

“These competitions can give you a boost and it happened to me in my first season as a manager at Crystal Palace because we got to the semi-finals and it spring-boarded us to winning games in the league.

“I’m not sending a reserve team down there. If first-team players are available, they play, simple as that.”

Freedman will not be taking much from the 3-3 friendly draw between the two sides 17 days ago, promising a more focussed approach going into the game.

“This is completely different,” he said of the first-round clash. “It was a friendly. In fact, we did a double training session just before the game which we certainly won’t be doing again. We let the players play off the cuff in terms of set pieces, which we won’t be doing either.

“Certain players were allowed to express their talents further up the field – and again, that won’t be happening as much this time around.”
