CHEERS Bar Vets and Daten – the top two in Division One – took time out of their title battle to concentrate on the cup, with vastly different outcomes.

Daten – two points behind Cheers Bar in the league – beat Division Three outfit BLGC 4-1 in the quarter-finals of the Sam Ashworth Cup, while Cheers Bar lost by the same scoreline in the last four.

Paul Whealing scored twice and John Burnham and Neil Matthews got the other two goals for Daten, while Jimmy Reynolds found the net for BLGC. But a Brian Love hat-trick and one from veteran Barry Massey saw Salford Waggon into the final at the expense of the title favourites.

Atherton Town took advantage of Salford Waggon’s weekend off to move above them into third place, with four goals from Stuart Rudd firing them to a comfortable 5-1 win at home to Radcliffe Old Boys A.

Pineapple finished their season on a high with a 6-3 win at home to Queen Lizzie, keeping them fifth in the table.

Mark Horridge and Mark Sloane both scored a brace for the home side, with Anthony Beech and Mark Wardley adding a goal apiece, while James Russell, Darren Hampson and Trevor Hill were on the score sheet for the visitors.

In Division Two, Turton Bay Mare cemented their place in second with a thumping 6-1 win at at third-placed PF Bury.

They had five different scorers – Stuart and Richard Stokes, Stuart Jenkins, Stewart Williams and Andy Clarke.

Radcliffe Old Boys B stretched their lead at the top of Division Three to five points, courtesy of a 3-1 win over bottom side Victory Vets that included goals from Noel Shine and Steve Goodridge.

There were also good wins for third-placed Ainsworth B, who beat Bolton Wyresdale 4-1, and Crossguns in fourth, who won 3-1 at Elton Liberals.
