HEAVYWEIGHT star Tyson Fury wants to make Bolton the home of boxing champions.

The unbeaten 25-year-old opened the new Team Fury gym in Halliwell Road last week with the dream of bringing world titles to the town.

Along with fellow heavyweight and cousin Hughie, and trainer and uncle Peter, Fury believes the new base at the Platinum Community Centre in the old Robin Hood pub has all the facilities to achieve that vision.

And the Stockport-born boxer who has won all 22 of his professional fights to date says Bolton is a perfect base.

Fury, who takes on Dereck Chisora at Manchester’s Phones 4U Arena in July, told The Bolton News: “We have a lot of friends in Bolton and so many people have helped us get the centre up and running.

“We want to make it a home of champions.

“It is going to be a great base for me and a great place to train and the aim is to bring a lot of titles back to Bolton.

“The town has a rich boxing history – there are a lot of good amateur boxing clubs here as well as Amir Khan’s gym down the road.

“It is becoming a great home for both amateur and professional boxing. Both Hughie and myself will be based here – we have been training here for a couple of weeks now.”

The Team Fury gym has been developed in conjunction with the Platinum Sports and Events Management Company headed by Asif Vali and the centre features state-of-the-art training facilities to help develop future champions.

There will not only be professionals based at the gym, however; a new amateur club – Metro ABC – will be run by local trainer Tommy Battel.

And 19-year-old Hughie, himself undefeated in 14 pro outings, believes it is just as important for local youngsters.

Hughie added: “When I was younger I trained a lot in Bolton.

“It is a good boxing town and hopefully we can keep that going at this gym.”

Amir Khan opened a boxing gym in Bolton years ago. It has provided affordable training facilities to youth of Bolton and has enabled many young boxers to get into the sport. It is next to Aldi in Halliwell.
