The rain continued to disrupt the weekend’s cricket programme on Sunday with only two matches getting underway in the first round of the Bolton Association’s Cross Cup.

Atherton had their bowlers to thank as they cruised into the second round with a nine-wicket victory at Golborne, while Adlington’s home tie with Daisy Hill will resume at lunchtime today after finally succumbing to the elements.

Set a target of 85 to win, Atherton hit 88-1 from their 13 overs to wrap up the tie. Professional Jamar Griffiths top-scored with 53 not out from his 23 balls and Dale Tyrer also notched 29no.

But the afternoon belonged to Atherton’s bowlers as Matthew Gallagher took five wickets for just five runs in his 4.2 overs, which contained two maidens, and Griffiths also took 3-26, including four maidens. The only batting score of note for Golborne was Tom Pantak’s 32 as the hosts were skittled for 84.

In the other fixture, Adlington tried in vain to complete their fixture at home to Daisy Hill, but after several weather interrupted stoppages the game was halted and will resume today.

Adlington took control of the bat first with last year’s professional Tom Foster top scoring with 57. Bowlers Steve Hodgkinson and Amjid Khan took 4-24 and 2-37 respectively as the hosts were out for 120-9.

More rain fell during tea and when play finally resumed two wickets apiece from Ben King and Majid Majeed dented Daisy’s Hill’s hopes of wrapping up the win, the only notable scoring from Sean Brooks with 29no.

With rain continuing to fall the decision was made to halt play for the day. The match resumes at 1.30pm.

Elsewhere, there was no play in any of the other games with Blackrod’s tie with Little Hulton, Elton’s cup game with Edgworth, Flixton against Winton, Lostock versus Bury, Walshaw’s home game with Standish and Swinton Moorside’s trip to Worsley all rained off.

The rescheduled ties will now be played on Sunday, June 1.

Result:

Golborne 84 Atherton 88-1, Atherton won by 9wkts.

Adlington 120-9 Daisy Hill 75-5. Play suspended due to rain. Match resumes today at 1.30pm.
