ONE of the areas's newest hockey clubs is hoping to attract players back to the sport.

Horwich Hockey Club have got plenty of reasons to celebrate as their men's first team won promotion to Division Five North South league – in their debut season.

Now, the fledgling club have big ambitions to grow in the next few seasons.

Christina Sanderson, treasurer, said: "We are doing a 'Back to Hockey' initiative on Saturdays between 1-3pm at Horwich Leisure Centre on the all-weather pitches.

"We want to welcome people to possibly forming another new men's side the following year and then a ladies' team.

"We would like to expand as much as we can, but aim to have more teams in the next couple of seasons.

"During the 'Back to Hockey' event there will be a training session and mini-games.

"We want to improve their fitness and provide enjoyment for everyone to show how good a sport it is.

"Whether you've played previously or are looking to try a new sport everyone is welcome to take part.

"'Back to Hockey' sessions are a great way to get fit and have fun with your mates."

The sessions start tomorrow and will take place on the following three Saturdays.

Horwich were formed in April 2014 and they want to add to their debut season success.

Christina added: "It was fantastic achievement for the first season as Horwich Hockey Club to win the league and progress further, and hopefully progress as a team and also a club.

"All we wanted was to have a great first year and the aim was to win the league and everyone was just ecstatic when they did it.

"The team are now looking to secure back-to-back promotions and will strive to maintain that forward momentum every season.

"The higher the league the more players we could attract," said Christina.

"All the players played their heart out last season, but Andy Robertson won the player of the season because when he is not on the field it is noticeable, he is an excellent skilled player."
