BOLTON Golf Association champion Gareth Hastie insists he is not going to get carried away after winning the famous Preston's Trophy for the fifth time last week.

There is certainly a trend running for the 36-year-old after winning the trophy in two year spells between 2006-7 and 2012-13.

But after bringing home the silverware this year, Hastie is not building up hopes for next season.

He said: "Last year, I was going for three-in-a-row and it did not work out so I am not going to thinking about winning it next year yet.

"It is being played at Hindley Hall and I have not played there much before.

"There is a customer from my business who is involved there so I hope to get a couple of early rounds in before the competition.

"I just want to keep my feet on the ground."

Hastie was speaking to the Bolton News as he was about to head down to the Logan Trophy which is the English Mid-Amateur Championships in Newcastle with Old Links golfer Matthew Buckley.

He believes his game has developed and experience put him in good stead for the heroics at Turton Golf Club in the BGA Championships and his final round was his best of the competition defeating Harwood's Anthony Stirling 4&2.

"I used to rush a bit around the course when I was younger but I tend to go slower now.

"I finished with five under par which included three birdies and an eagle on the 14th.

"I think that was the turning point and there was a bit of a relief that I had extended my lead."

The fifth-win was enough for Hastie to move level with the illustrious Howard Broadbent in the list of winners.

He said: "It was great to see Howard there around the course for such a special occasion was brilliant."

Hastie admitted he also had a special weapon in securing the victory.

He said: "I used to play and had a friends at Turton and Dunscar.

"My caddie for the final round was Jeff Dykins and he was a former captain at Turton in 2008.

"I asked if he could help me out and caddie.

"It was great because he knew the secrets of the course and he really helped me out."

Hastie insists the future of golf in Bolton is looking bright with the likes of Stirling coming through the ranks to challenge for the main title.

He said: "Anthony is a good player and played really well and concentrated well. He was also close in the Bury Championships.

"When you think about there are lots of young Bolton golfers such as Liam (Ball) dominating the Lancashire championships."
