THERE was a nail-biting finish in the A Section of the Bolton Badminton League with third-placed Westhoughton A edging out Hawkshaw B in the final game.

Westhoughton's Jason Lee and James Lowe decided it with a 22-20 win which secured an overall 10-8 triumph for their team.

Their first couple, Rebecca Shurvington and Craig Harvey, won the opening games for their team 21-15, 21-16, against Lesley Quigley and Clint Gibbs.

Hawkshaw’s first pair, Sarah Gradwell and Scott Heywood then shared their games winning the first 21-19 before Mie Wall and Lowe took the second 21-13.

When the third couples met Westhoughton’s Alison Muddiman and Lee won both games 21-17 and a closely-fought second 22-20, against Choi Davidson and Gordon Mitchell.

Eighth-placed Hawkshaw turned the tables when the first couples met – Gradwell and Heywood winning comfortably, 21-9, 21-16 against Shurvington and Harvey.

Westhoughton’s Wall and Lowe then reciprocated by winning their games 21-12, 21-14 against Quigley and Gibbs in the second couples’ clash.

Going into the level doubles Westhoughton were ahead 7-3 but the determined pairing of Davidson and Gradwell fought back taking both the first pair of ladies’ games 21-12, 21-19 against Muddiman and Shurvington.

When the first pair of men’s games was played, Westhoughton’s Lee and Harvey won the first 21-18 but Mitchell and Heywood claimed the second 21-17 for Hawkshaw.

The final four games of the match were shared with Westhoughton’s Muddiman and Wall winning the first game 21-16, and Davidson and Quigley the second 21-17 when the second pair of ladies met.

Hawkshaw’s Mitchell and Gibbs won the first game in the last men’s games 21-16 but the final game produced a nail-biting finish to the match with Lee and Lowe edging it.
