AT £8.2million Wanderers didn’t see many moments of magic from the most expensive signing ever made at the club.

But on this week in 2010, Johan Elmander scored a goal against Wolves that ranks among the very best in the history books.

Wanderers won the game 3-2, Richard Stearman’s early own goal setting them on their way before Stuart Holden capped things off with the third.

Elmander’s effort, an intricate, mazy run after turning with his back to goal on the edge of the box, was voted by The Guardian newspaper as the best scored in the Premier League via an online poll.

Wolves made a game of it, Kevin Foley and Steven Fletcher bringing the game back to 3-2 but Owen Coyle’s side held out to move into fifth place in the Premier League.

Also this week, Kevin Davies scored on his return to Bramall Lane in 2006 as Wanderers took a point at Sheffield United.

El-Hadji Diouf got Sam Allardyce’s side off to the perfect start before Davies – released by his boyhood club at the age of 15 – doubled the lead.

Mike Leigertwood’s header brought the Yorkshiremen back into the game before a mistake from Jussi Jaaskelainen allowed ex-Bury youngster Colin Kazim-Richards to sweep home an equaliser three minutes later.

We’ll finish with a hat-trick of hat-tricks scored on this week in history.

In 1888 James Turner became the only Wanderers player to score a hat-trick on his competitive debut for the club – grabbing three of the goals in a comprehensive 9-0 win over West Manchester in the FA Cup second round.

Eleven years later the Whites beat Liverpool 8-1 in the Lancashire Cup, with Billy Butler scoring four times.

And in 1953, newly-capped England international Harold Hassall celebrated his call-up with a hat-trick in a 6-1 win against Portsmouth at Burnden Park.
