WELLINGTON Silva has staked a claim to make a final appearance for Wanderers after making a successful return for the development squad on Tuesday night.
The Brazilian winger has not figured since limping out of the 6-0 defeat at Bristol City in March but scored twice for the Under-21s as they were knocked out on penalties by Manchester City in the Manchester Senior Cup semi-final.
Jimmy Phillips hoped to have him fit for the weekend’s season finale at Fulham, which will be the winger’s last appearance for the Whites before he returns to Arsenal.
Wellington picked up in good form, giving the Whites a 2-1 lead at the break after David Faupala had opened the scoring for City.
Synan Bytuqi restored parity after the break and though both sides had chances to seal a place in the final against either Bury or Manchester United, penalties were required.
Kaiyne Woolery missed from the spot for Wanderers, who named a strong line-up including Alex Finney, Tom Walker and Jamie Thomas.
Although Harry Campbell made a save from Angelo Tasende in the shootout, Chris Cvetko’s miss proved decisive and City made their way through to the final.
