THREE Burnden members claimed category wins in the opening race of the Astley Park Midweek Series.

Andy Staveley was first Burndener home on the 4.3-mile, two-lap course along paths and trails through the park and woods, coming first V55 in 27mins 26secs. Isaline Pollitt was first L50 in 32:10 and Anne Ferguson first L55 in 33:50.

Shirley Staveley came third L50 in 34:15 to secure the ladies third place in the team standings.

Adrian Merritt (31:00), Steven Bate (33:08) and Kierenne Baldwin (46:33) completed the club’s turn-out.

Seven members took on the Up the Nab Fell Race, a four-mile test starting at Glossop Rugby Club in Charlesworth in the Peak District which includes 1,200ft of climb.

In the men’s race, Marcus Taylor was the first member home in 45:29, followed by Martyn Pollitt (46:27), Laurence Keighley (54:12) and Andy Warburton (1:03.10).

In the women’s event Anne Ferguson (52:57) and Gwen Kinloch (55:39) finished in the top five in the F55 category with Isaline Pollitt completing the club representation in 56:16.

Isaline and Martyn Pollitt followed that run up the next day by taking part in the gruelling Fred Whitton Sportive, a 112-mile test of rider and machine.

The route of this popular and incredibly arduous challenge snakes around the Lake District, starting at Grasmere and taking in climbs at Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott and Wrynose passes.

Martyn completed the course in 7:45.58 with Isaline crossing the finish line in 9:16.52.

The Kentmere 10K Trail Race in the Lake District attracted four members with John Edge first of them home in 1:15.09.

Alec Cottrill (1:28.47) and Sally Cottrill (1:28.48) were next to complete the tough but scenic route with Dawn Evans crossing in 1:39.24.

Liz McLellan again proved her prowess at triathlon by coming second female and 11th overall in the Pendle Sprint event.

She completed the 400m swim and T1 in 10:42, 22.4km bike ride to T2 in 44:35 and the 5K run in 23:35 for a total time of 1:19.53.
