SCORING four times in a home game should generally be enough to win a game of football, but Little Lever manager Matt Barnes was fuming as his side shipped seven in their defeat to Oldham Hulmeians.

Lever’s Jack Coop found the net twice and Craig Bingham and Kieran Yates were also on target but after an “awful” showing from his men Barnes has served notice that new faces should be arriving soon and changes are afoot.

“We were awful on Saturday, plain and simple,” he said. “ They scored a couple of good free kicks but the others were scrappy goals that we never seem to score, we just give them away. One of them our keeper won a race to the ball to clear it and it hit their striker and went in. It was one of those days when, from one to 11, we were just awful.”

Barnes is hoping to welcome fresh blood to Mytham Road before they next take to the field, in the form of ex-Bury forward Jon Newby.

“There are going to be changes,” added Barnes. “Jon will play for the reserves on Saturday and hopefully he’ll be available for us after that, and we’re hoping we’ll soon have a new lad in from Gregorians too.

“Scoring hasn’t been our problem, defending is. I think complacency came into it so we’ll get back to basics and hope for a reaction when we play the big boys in the next few games.”

Horwich St Mary’s Victoria had no such problems at the weekend as they kept up with leaders Failsworth Dynamos with a 5-2 victory at home to the side in third, Mostonians.

Horwich manager Danny Holmes was also less than thrilled by their performance but with just one defeat so far – to Failsworth – he had to credit his players for a four-goal spree in the last 15 minutes that secured a dramatic come-from-behind victory.

With Ryan Mee scoring the hosts led after a dominant first half but that was cancelled out soon after the break when Matthew Makinson gave away a penalty.

After Mostonians scored a second Holmes rang the changes and Jonny Shacklady levelled, heading in after Benson Johnson had crashed a shot against the bar.

Junior Kamara hit two quick-fire goals for Horwich and Johnson completed the win with a crisp finish after cutting in from the right.

“It was a good result in the end but it could have gone either way,” said Holmes. “It wasn’t the greatest of performances, the scoreline definitely flattered us.

“We came through strongly at the end when we needed to show what we’re made of and a win’s a win.

“We strengthened well in summer and with Roach Dynamos in the cup on Saturday we may rotate a few, look at our depth and give one or two a chance to come in and show what they can do.”

Blackrod Town will have few complaints after a magnificent 7-1 win at Whitworth Valley, with Connor Loftus (two), Matthew Davies (two), Alex Leigh, Elliott Waugh and David Sutch on the mark.
